“When Jesus says, as He does often, ‘He who has ears, let him hear,’ He means hear what you should. God exhorts the lazy to ‘work harder.’ and the workaholic to ‘take it easy’ and the sluggard relaxes as the frenzied worker increases effort. The question is not, What do I agree with? The question is, what do I need to hear?

Swimming Against the Current contains stories, poems, questions, and observations. Some of the many short chapters will challenge you. Others, you will exult in. You’ll find some new thoughts, and some of them will stick with you.

"From the very first paragraph, Blake takes readers on a thrilling and often humorous journey of discovering God and life as you never saw them before.” —Sam McKee, senior pastor, Sunnyvale Seventh-day Adventist Church, Sunnyvale, California

"This book will make you want to keep nudging the person next to you to say, “Listen to this!” and will keep you turning pages long after you should have turned out the lights. Blake has produced essential reading for anyone who wants to know more fully what it means to follow Christ.”—Bettina Krause, special assistant to the president, General Conference.

“Chris Blake writes with thought, humor, warmth, and passion. In Swimming Against the Current, he describes a kind of life, a kind of faith, and a kind of church that cares, that matters and that can make a difference in the world—and that I want to be a part of."—Nathan Brown, author, Revelation; editor, Signs of the Times and Record in the South Pacific Division.

Chris Blake is an English and communications professor at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska.
His bestselling book Searching for a God to Love has been translated into four languages. He enjoys playing disc golf.

Previously, Chris served at Review and Herald Publishing Association from 1986 to 1993 as editor of Insight magazine, where he edited 400 issues. While at Insight Chris won numerous national awards from Associated Church Press and Evangelical Press Association for writing (humor, feature, and editorial) and editing. (One of his stories is reprinted in Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul.) He also developed Youth Summits, produced special issues such as "The Jesus Series," helped conceive Maranatha's annual Ultimate Workout, and directed Darrel Tank's "Expressions of Jesus" prints. In addition, he compiled Insight's Most Unforgettable Stories, More Unforgettable Stories, and A Reason to Believe, the Adventist youth doctrinal/baptismal guide.

Prior to that, Chris worked as editorial director at Concerned Communications, where among many projects he created Bodywise: The Health Magazine for Kids and wrote the seminar Learning to Love. He was a junior academy teacher for five years in Arroyo Grande, California.

While at Union College, he has served as the president of the Adventist English Association, and is the sponsor for the Union College chapter of Amnesty International. He created the Something Else Sabbath School, from which the book Reinvent Your Sabbath School is derived.

Chris comes from a non-Adventist background that enables him to meet the postmodern mindset in a disarming, relevant way. In his writing and speaking, Chris combines Christ-centered depth, humor, and freshness. He's a popular speaker, particularly with young adults, and has spoken at camp meetings, church retreats, commencements, and many special events.

Chris is devoted to his family. He and his wife, Yolanda, have two married sons: Nathan, who is married to Andrea, and Geoffrey, who is married to Natalie.
